.#AcademicFreedom is essential for strong universities+ strong democracies. In the context of the ERA Conference on 🇪🇺Competitiveness, AF also is smart economics, as it ensures the attractiveness of Europe's universities to researchers from (many) countries that don't have it!

The hugely important European Research Council (ERC) starting grants awarded today are a triumph for each researcher, their home institution+for🇪🇺! We still need more successful applications from eastern Europe, but University of Tartu + Vilnius University (2 each) demonstrate the success of long-term strategies!
