Lord Byron’s unfinished vampire story “Fragment of a Novel”, written in response to his own ghost story challenge the night prior at Villa Diodati, was dated and likely written #OTD 17 June 1816. Byron’s fragment, as well as Byron himself, influenced Dr. Polidori’s “The Vampyre”.

A (belated) shout out for Jonathan Sach's magisterial 2018 monograph on the concept of decline in Romanticism. Each chapter loaded with insights: on the temporal parallax of slow vs accelerated time, the aesthetics of ruin, Darwin and Romanticism, and much more.

Dr Polidori begins his ghost story today... then madness ensues after Lord Byron reads lines from Coleridge’s poem ‘Christabel’. Not only was Shelley ‘influenced’ by the poem, so was Edgar Allan Poe, and it may have had an influence on Le Fanu’s vampire novella Carmilla (1872).
