To monitor insect species, and see if they are increasing or decreasing, scientists need detailed #BiologicalRecord s to be collated over time. Get involved in biological recording to help us better understand insects & where they live: insectweek.org/discover-insec… #RecordInsects

Around 40 species last night in my garden here in Fordham, East Cambs on my return from a week away. 3 new for year, but the star of the show wasn't a moth at all, but a fabulous Nothochrysa fulviceps, a stunning Lacewing which has been confirmed by Colin Plant as new for Cambs

Mary Wollstonecraft #Shelley was born today in 1797. She wrote the Gothic novel #Frankenstein published in 1818. We commemorate her with a specimen that looks like a wasp, a damselfly and a mantis all in one - truly a Frankenstein example in the natural world, a mantisfly.

Enjoyable day at Harper Adams University teaching #Mecoptera, #Neuropterida, and #FossilInsects to an excellent group of @EntoMasters MSc students. Great to catch up with Simon Segar again.

We had a great lecture from Dr James E. Jepson on the history of neuroptera and fossilisation today, I can't believe how well preserved some fossils can be! My favourite fossils - Neuroptera from the Cretaceous - Odonata from the Jurassic - Odonata nymphs from the early Neogene

Excellent trip to RSPB Conwy today with @LisaRoseJepson and @lazuli27 - two Red Breasted Mergansers being a highlight. Also, noticed Chrysoperla carnea hanging out in one of the hides #Lacewing #Neuroptera #RSPB

Our new research finds that spot-on flea treatments on pets are a major source of river contamination with potent insecticides. Also, owners hands are continually contaminated by contact with treated pets. Pls RT (1/2) theguardian.com/environment/20… Rose Perkins PAN UK

February brings us closer to the return of bumblebees – you may even be lucky enough to see some this month! 👀 Bumblebee queens emerge from hibernation in spring, when rising temperatures and longer days awaken them from their winter snooze in the soil 👑💤 🧵 1/2
