More for ! 'we successfully sequenced an entire mitochondrial genome from two legs of this fly and replaced them on the specimen after' - Ben Price. Sequencing genomic data from our collections helps DNA reference projects like Biodiversity Genomics Europe (BGE), iBOLEurope & iBOL Consortium.

For comparison with that last RT, here's the Common Groundhopper (Tetrix undulata) with much shorter wings

Groundhoppers are the forgotten members of the grasshopper/cricket order. Unlike their relatives that are strongly seasonal, these can be found in adult or young stages all through the year. This one & the short-winged Common Groundhopper can often be found together near water.

Hi, I'm Diana, curator for Hemiptera and Thysanoptera with NHM Small Orders. My favourite specimens are on slides - like this female psyllid. To me, preparing a 1mm insect for microscope observation is the perfect junction between science and craftmanship.

Happy !
To celebrate we've put together a thread of matriarchs of the museum.

Starting off with the termite queen. She is typically the oldest termite in the colony, living up to 25-50 years, ensuring the survival of the colony

1/2 no. 199 is Meadow Grasshopper. The commonest of our grasshoppers in most places. Typically green but sometimes has pink like this one. Female is short winged, with a lot of exposed black on abdomen and pronotum is diagnostic.

This Bird-locust (Ornithacris pictula magnifica) has an absolutely striking appearance with its magnificent purple wings. Their wings can be purple, red or orange and the colour is determined by many other factors, not just genetics. Isn't it gorgeous? 💜🦗

Tomorrow is the start of the New Lunar Year, on which begins the Year of the Dragon.
The Lunar New Year is celebrated around the world in many countries and communities. What better way to join the celebration if not posting photos of a specimens that look like a dragon?
