I used to be one of the Australian diplomats regularly lobbying United Nations committee members to say the Great Barrier Reef isn’t in danger. Minister Tanya Plibersek we all know the reef is in deep danger. So is our entire climate system. From burning fossil fuels.

Bleaching getting more severe in Las Perlas, Pacific Panama. Many colonies now ~100% bleached, some with substantial mortality (note the algal overgrowth on parts of the white colonies, indicating that the coral tissue underneath has died).

As per Environmental Investigation Agency and OceanCare's new report "Clean-ups or Clean-Washing", we will not get out of the #plasticcrisis by relying on damaging quick fixes. Instead, Governments need to prioritise reducing production. oceancare.org/en/stories_and…

Important new report: Just as in the IPCC, it shows that if we go beyond 1.5, we enter a high-risk zone of crossing tipping points. We need to move fast to avoid moving to a point where the Earth system takes over & pushed us in a direction with unmanageable conditions.

COP28 is now on the verge of complete failure. The world desperately needs to phase out fossil fuels as quickly as possible, but this obsequious draft reads as if OPEC dictated it word for word. It is even worse than many had feared. It is “Of the Petrostates, By the Petrostates

It’s also possible, that heat stress in the Far North is not reflected fully in bleaching impacts because there’s already relatively low coral cover up there
