COACHES: Coaching today's generation of kids is about relationships and connecting with them. Players will still "run through walls" for you if they know, like, or trust you. It's not enough that you care about them. They have to know that you care about them.

You hold people accountable because you care about them, because you see their potential, because you refuse to let them settle. The key is that they must know and believe that you are for them. That only comes through relational trust. Care and connect, then bring challenge.

Anyone can have a good attitude when they're playing well, the team is winning, they're getting minutes, or the refs are not "picking on them". But a player's true self shows when things are not going well. Have a good attitude regardless of the circumstances.

I was taught to "coach on the run." No yelling from across the field. The best coaching happens between the reps. When you hustle to go where the athlete is, pause to look him in the eyes, coach him up and tell him you believe in him. That’s when transformation begins.

You can’t coach every kid the same, but you can love them all the same. Figure out what makes each one tick and then deliver. Tough love. Some will run through a brick wall for you. Connect and correct with care and intention. Others will run through a brick wall for you.
