Asking for a friend: is there any data out there on how much the employees of large companies receive in working tax credit (effectively a government top up for low wages)? And if not, could HMRC produce some?

I saw a promo for the new Gladiator movie and said to my husband, “That looks good. I wonder if I need to see the original first so I know what’s going on.” My husband jumped up and with his full outside voice said, “YOU’VE NEVER SEEN GLADIATOR?!?” 2.5 hrs later, credits

Good to see the new government picking up the baton from the previous government on pensions reform - and running further and faster.

The Berlin zonal plan of 1903. Each colour corresponds to a set of rules on height and plot use, which are given in the key. The entire system, with unambiguous 'bright-line' rules governing every brownfield and greenfield site, fitted on one large sheet of paper.

I’m confused. Apparently it would be a good thing for the UK to boost productivity as it would make us all better off. But whenever any government does something that might encourage an increase in productivity it is a bad thing.

I appreciate this may not be a question of national significance but this is the public toilet in my local park and I'm wondering how on earth it costs £285k to refurbish it - when from the photos nothing structural has been done?!

If you have ever cancelled a subscription to The Spectator I would strongly recommend that you check your bank statements to confirm that they haven't been taking money from your account for more than a year after they sent you the email confirming the cancellation...

This is a really stupid question but…if I am a farmer today and I inherit my father’s farm (worth about £5m) and I decide to sell it, what tax do I pay? Asking for a friend.

It looks like there is some good news with Voyager 1 – communications have been restored, allowing the spacecraft to keep sending data back. The fact that Voyager 1 is 47 years old and still functioning and providing information to us is a testament to the quality of the research

The bubbles on the left are US publicly traded companies that are less than 50 years old with a market capitalization of $10B+. The bubbles on the right are the same but for the EU. Great visual from Andrew McAfee 🇺🇦's newsletter.

Amazingly nonsensical article. Building lots more houses? Who’s going to buy them, houses are expensive? 🤦‍♂️ The solution is the government should do a new Help To Buy to fuel demand 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️ thetimes.com/article/619cf2…
