The final days of the Arctic Collaborative Ecosystem cruise have turned icy as Sikuliaq navigates the Chukchi Sea. NOAA Research scientist Shaun Bell recorded an image of the ship navigating sea ice amid periodic fog, 30F temps, 15-20 knot winds and calmer seas.

There have been notable wildlife sightings in recent days, but seabird and whale activity in the Bering Strait region has been lighter than in previous transits. Other encounters included a curious polar bear and cubs while traveling along the North Slope. 📷 Harry Daghir

The Arctic Mobile Observing System cruise left Nome on Sunday, studying ocean-ice-atmosphere variability to support US Navy and Coast Guard missions. The 18-day cruise will take place deep in the Arctic, with the closest site about 200 miles from the coast.

Much of the Bering Land Bridge was a swampy obstacle rather than a grassy pathway between Siberia and Alaska, according to research from a 2023 cruise aboard R/V Sikuliaq. Scientists believe that kept some large species from expanding their range. uaf.edu/news/bering-la…

Sikuliaq is back in Seward, where it is mobilizing for a cruise to collect deep sediment cores from the Gulf of Alaska. Scientists are examining the cores to learn how microbes have adapted to survive in low-energy environments. 📷 Sarah Spanos

The summer phase of this year’s Northern Gulf of Alaska LTER cruise has come to an end! Scientists are working to better understand the rich and diverse ecosystem through a long-term U.S. National Science Foundation data-gathering project in the gulf. The nearly month-long cruise ended in Seward on Sunday.
