Mother’s day will not feel the same as palestinian mothers are being forced to witness their children not only die, but slowly fade as they get mangled. Mothers are being murdered, mothers are being forced to give birth without anesthesia, mothers are dying. mothers are dying.

As principled & brave students protest their graduations in solidarity with Gaza, let's remember that the graduation robe was modelled after the Arabic/Islamic thawb, the first uni was founded by a Muslim woman, & Muslims established the first uni in Europe (9th century). 1/

Recalling the origins of unis & graduations clarifies the audacity & betrayal of Western academia for its complicity in the ongoing genocide against 🇵🇸, including defamation of Arabs & Muslims as backward & violent. To fellow student-activists, take up space. Be loud.

And the graduation cap comes from the tradition of placing a Quran on the head of the newly minted scholar - the tassel was the Quran’s bookmark. It was “to symbolize the primacy of Scripture over the intellect.” Can I get a Mashallah. :) baytalfann.com/post/graduatio…

blocking celebs is performative activism. for it to be real, you need to affect the flow of commerce. that would mean not playing the songs on the radio (need to work with the DJs), stop playing their music on streaming services, stop engaging with their shows and ads.
