A counter argument to the one sided hysteria over the proposed changes to inheritance tax relief on inherited agricultural land. Farmers have hoarded land for too long. Inheritance tax will bring new life to rural Britains theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Jeremy Clarkson, James Dyson, the Earl of Derby – they’re up in arms about paying tax on the vast areas of land they own. Small farmers are worried that changes to Agricultural Property Relief (APR) will affect them. But who are the big landowners complaining the loudest?... 1/

6/ Minette Batters, ex-NFU head, attacked changes to APR in this piece, referring to “a typical 500-acre mixed-use farm”. But 500 acres isn’t typical: in fact, it’s bigger than 90% of English farms. 59% of all farms in England are smaller than 123 acres: gov.uk/government/sta…

8/ The farmer Guy Singh-Watson, who founded Riverford Organics, welcomes changes to APR, because, as he says, he’s “glad to see tax loopholes closing for cynical investor landowners”: theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

10/ Small farmers deserve all our support. But they’re not well-served by wealthy landowners dodging taxes, pushing up land prices & making it harder for small farmers to buy farmland. We need a #ClarksonTax on wealthy landowners [ENDS]

Our public services are broken.  The Government is asking rich estates and the most valuable farms to pay their fair share. Small family farms will not be affected. Only about 500 estates a year will pay more under the new scheme than they do today. telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/…

Torsten Bell (@torstenbell) 's Twitter Profile Photo

So much misinformation around today on who will be affected by changes to inheritance tax - and lobbyists pretending the data isn't clear to obfuscate. We have detailed data on estates so the truth is in fact very clear if you care to look 🧵

Net zero regulations are not the cause of car makers’ woes. George Dibb responds to the latest news on Vauxhall’s planned plant closure and the growing warnings from other car manufacturers about potential job cuts.

🚙 How can we make sense of the Vauxhall/Stellantis factory closure? First must avoid mixing up cause and effect, just because this is happening at the same time as the ZEV mandate doesn't mean it's the cause It's clear IMO that this has nothing to do with net zero regulations

George Dibb (@georgedibb) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I'm sympathetic to the idea that there are some policy fixes and demand stimulus is needed But this means NOT rolling back on targets, or the size of carrots or sticks, but asking what financial support gov can give to consumers to drive demand and ease transition

George Dibb (@georgedibb) 's Twitter Profile Photo

The only path to a UK auto manufacturing sector in 10yr is a fast transition to EV production The gov needs to realise that some firms don't want change (those cries for certainty weren't lies) and they need to face down low investment laggards for the sake of British prosperity

Josh Emden (@joshemden) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Lots of dubious claims made about EV manufacturing at the moment, which this article unfortunately repeats TL;DR: UK EV demand is growing, manufacturers will likely meet the ZEV mandate easily, the issue is global demand and bad business decisions 1/12 bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…
