People go mad for foggy, atmospheric images of Wistman's Wood in Devon, with its gnarly old epiphyte-clad oaks. But it's clearly a totally *trashed* rainforest ecosystem. Everything lower down has been eaten, except mosses. Why do we find that denuded aesthetic so pleasing? 🤔

Around 90% of Irish so-called 'forests' are industrial plantations, totally bereft of diverse life. And people wonder why nature is crashing...

It's mad to think almost this entire landscape was once *incredibly* species-rich native rainforest. And that it would revert unassisted, but for those 4-legged strimmers. But maddest of all is that for farmers, no sheep = no subsidies. YOUR taxes are pushing ecological ruin.

There's so much potential for restoration projects on this landscape. Whilst this land is all within the Mweelrea/Sheefra SAC...woodlands are not a qualifying interest, ie a habitat deemed important to protect/restore.
