Dale Street, Ossett. Another mill bites the dust. Samuel Edwin Langley & his brother John ran a mungo & shoddy business from Langley's Mill, next to the Horse & Jockey. In the 1960s the mill was taken over by Northfield Industrial Fabrications. #ossett #localhistory #nostalgia

Mrs Fred Wilson was Julia, the wife of George Frederick Wilson. At the age of eleven, her daughter Margaret Wilson became the youngest mayoress in the country. Julia had died shortly before the election and so Margaret took on the role.

At the time, along with her three brothers, Margaret was a boarder at the Quaker School in Ackworth. She said she seemed to have plenty of time off from school and remembered the year fondly. Her duties included "giving speeches and opening things".

Another object with a fascinating local history connection. Mrs Fred Wilson was Julia Hanson; she was Mayoress of Ossett four times. In 1928, at the age of eleven, her daughter Margaret became the youngest mayoress in the country. Find out how here ⬇️ facebook.com/groups/ossettt…

Photos of long demolished places regularly turn up in our Facebook group. This house was on Chapel Street. Both chapel and street are long gone. Using the 1911 census I got to know some of the residents. You'll find them here ⬇️ facebook.com/groups/ossettt…
