What a week. What a year of support and learning ahead from industry professionals and writers. Setbacks and rejections are unavoidable in writing, but this feeling overwhelms every hardship. Writing, eh? Some thing. Thank you again, New Writing North, judges and partners.

V happy to congratulate Adam Barrett Adam Barrett & Jessica Holmes for jointly winning The Sid Chaplin Award given by New Writing North. I admired their entries - powerful, tender, above all authentic - & I think my Dad, here by Norman Cornish, wd have done too

Sky Sports News Bitter sweet transfer for Elliot A, hope he returns to the club at some point. Reminded of his family connections to the Toon via Geoff Allen, as referenced in Michael Chaplin’s great book about being a Toon fan and embracing Tyneside.

Brian Elliott Ian McMillan Interesting. Michael Chaplin can you do the same for your father? His books are so varied, I would genuinely be interested to know whether he had a favourite?

This news about the remarkable Claire Malcolm has made my day. She's an inspirational leader & a lovely person; one of several people who've kept me writing. We're so very lucky to have Claire & the rest of the amazing team at New Writing North. Congratulations, Claire!🥳

Yesterday I was made an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature at a beautiful event. Here I am signing my name in the roll book with George Elliot's pen. Not a moment that my teenage self would have ever dreamed of. So many lovely people including a fellow Claire 🩷

Michael Chaplin Bloodaxe Books Certainly is. And nice little time capsule from 1987 tucked inside!

Pleasure to explore the Sid Chaplin archive today at Newcastle Uni Special Collections & Archives Newcastle University Library as part of the Northern Writers' Awards support. (Photo of my SD collection.) Michael Chaplin

Adam Barrett Newcastle Uni Special Collections & Archives Newcastle University Library Michael Chaplin It's brilliant to see you enjoying the archive - I loved seeing Chaplin's thought processes evolve in relation to certain novels. Great to see your SC collection too. Mine's almost identical!

Michael Chaplin Morning , I see BBC Radio 4 extra are playing Kitty's Grandma and Mrs Chatterjee tomorrow.

I promised you two long reads from The QT archives this weekend (I trust you have already enjoyed the tale from Chris Jackson 🏳️🌈🇺🇦 that he discovered when he was in New Zealand). Now I bring you words from that gifted storyteller Michael Chaplin who makes an epic journey through time

Very emotional after finishing what I'm calling the 'Soul Edit' of my flapping novel yesterday. 71,000 words of dialect edited in 100s of longhand pages, but I can't measure the ways in which I feel I'm stepping forward in my craft thanks to Elise Middleton's wonderful guidance...

Really, really excited to receive a test copy of the #ACESupported COAL FACE book of Andy Martin's film photography & my verbatim poetry! It's incredible to see our participants' stories in print & know that Redhills Durham will be publishing it after a few design tweaks...
