Space travel alters the kidneys, with cosmic radiation causing damage that would jeopardise any mission to Mars, finds new research involving Dr Keith Siew & Prof Stephen Walsh DoM_UCL UCL Faculty of Medical Sciences, part of a Nature Portfolio package on spaceflight & health ucl.ac.uk/news/2024/jun/…

Take a listen to Times Radio Interview with @StephenBWalsh & Keith Siew about #CosmicKidneyDisease on the Jane Garvey & fi glover show. Part 1 is here and part 2 on the thread below. To read more about the research see our paper in Nature Communications 👩🚀🚀rdcu.be/dKwBE

It's lift off for the 9th edition of the ESA/ELGRA Gravity Related Research Summer School 🚀 30 students will learn about gravity related research and engineering for the next 2 weeks 🧑🚀 WE ❤️ GRAVITY European Space Agency ESA ELGRA SELGRA Birkbeck, University of London Birkbeck, Faculty of Science

🚀 Keith Siew took us to outer space this morning with a great seminar about the effects of spaceflight on the kidney. Cosmic kidney disease is a thing! Thanks for hosting Michael Vaughan and Sarah Vergult !

👏Today Keith Siew gave an excellent talk on his recent Nature Communications paper on the effects of spaceflight on kidneys 👏. He got the FunGen Lab @ UGent team (even more) excited about space research 🚀🧬🚀. Thanks a lot Michael Vaughan for inviting him and arranging all the logistics!

Great to see the Umbrella paper for the package making it to the front cover of nature in print (with Keith Siew & Stephen B. Walsh as co-authors). Hard to believe our Nature Communications Space paper has 24k accesses & 99.98th percentile on Altmetric after 3mo nature.com/articles/s4146…

Throwback to last week: On Tuesday Nore Van Loon gave a talk at MAF 2024 concerning our collaborative work with Ruslan Dmitriev . On Thursday Lisa Hamerlinck and Sarah Vergult presented at the 2nd NDD conference in lovely Antwerp with great support by colleague @colombolara_.

Busy, busy, busy so a little late to the party... Congratulations 🥳👏 to our own PhD student Nore Van Loon for obtaining a prestigious FWO PhD fellowship! Happy she can keep on working on our shared project with Ruslan Dmitriev ! Go, go, go Nore!

Hooray, last week we had our first 2-day lab retreat and it was awesome 🔥! Great combination of science and fun. Big shout out to the entire team for making it such a great experience🤩 and a special thanks to Eva D'haene and Michael Vaughan for all the help!

The FunGen lab was well represented at two great conferences in the last two weeks: Nore Van Loon went to the EMBO workshop in Capri, IT and @colombolara_ went to Chromatin Dynamics in Munich, GER. They both rocked their poster presentation 😎! Go Team FunGen 💪🥳!

Proud of Rocío Pérez Baca for doing a great job during her talk on our collaborative work on ZFHX4, co-led by María Palomares FunGen Lab @ UGent Bert Callewaert #ASHG24

📢 Very excited to share the most recent publication from my PhD work at 3D Models of Health and Disease on a novel technique to produce acellular and aligned collagen I tissues in a rapid way📝🎉 Rapid biofabrication of cell-free, anisotropic collagen tissues using ... sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Delighted to have been highlighted by NASA GeneLab as one of the #OSDR success stories for 2024. It's been a huge joy and pleasure to get to know so many wonderful people in the space health research community. Check out the links: youtu.be/OnP4Bcl_nCE?si… nasa.gov/open-science-s…
