The more you bullshit, the more likely you are to fall for other people's bullshit. Data: those who exaggerate their expertise to impress others are more vulnerable to misinformation. When people speak without concern for the truth, they can't be trusted to recognize the truth.

I'm reading Robert Sapolsky's Determined: Life Without Free Will as a mild form of self harm and here are two perfect pages - ego depletion, surgeon's birthdays, Francesca Gino/Dan Ariely study, implicit bias, hungry judges - all on the same page!!!

I went from hearing about SMTM for the 1st time ever on Monday (on the Four Beers pod) to watching them destroy any credibility they might've had on Tuesday. Life comes at you fast, I guess.

Here's two that I remember that I played on my Commodore 64 (before that, we had an Atari 2600). I also vaguely recall a text-based game I played that took around 30 minutes to load on the 64's cassette tape drive.

One of the most valuable non-science courses I ever took as an undergrad was "Logic," a philosophy course. The sections on propositional logic, predicate logic, and logical fallacies (formal & informal) made me the pedantic ass that I am today. 😂🧠

Joe Pierre, MD We're witnessing what I like to call a "bullshit ouroboros." Fringe conspiracy theories get leveraged by political elites, which make the CTs more popular, which encourage the elites to invoke them even more, which makes the CTs more popular, which... Lather, rinse, repeat.

In February 2024, I wrote Scientific Reports about a published meta-analysis claiming that mindfulness interventions affect neural plasticity, 'cementing the neuropsychological basis of mindfulness-based interventions'. Paper was retracted yesterday—here a process summary.🧵

Research finds videos hosted by experts *and* accompanied by a high-tempo background beat are the most effective at reducing belief in antivaccination misinformation, likely because the background music distracts from counterarguing: buff.ly/1qqJqCI

Very cool intervention. Also, instead of just relying on AI to do this for us, it'd behoove us to start teaching these types of techniques to everyone in elementary, middle, and high schools across the country too.

Alright, fine... Curious about the science of nonsense, like why people believe 🐂💩, fall for propaganda, and speak fluent corporate gibberish? If so, come hang out: bullshitology.substack.com

I recently saw a hot sauce that's flavored with apricots and, up until that moment, I had completely forgotten that apricots even exist.
