Archive Hour Q2: ITMA works closely with communities to document the tradition. It is important to build trust with all stakeholders. ITMA regularly gives presentations about the work of the archive at events. This is a great way to engage & inform communities #ArchiveHour

Here at ITMA we have an extensive field recording programme which first began in the 1990s. Over the last 30 years, ITMA has travelled to festivals & events all over Ireland & further afield to document Irish traditional music, song and dance. itma-atom.arkivum.net/index.php/ifsr… #ArchiveHour

Q3: There is a vast range of ICHs, intangible in different ways. What methods have you used to capture/preserve the ICH in your collections? What has/hasn’t worked? (Reply to this tweet, start your tweet with Q3 & use #ArchiveHour)

Q2: Why not teach the next generation of tradition bearers to appreciate the archival process? ITMA has a well established work experience programme (for 15/16 yr olds). An interesting fact! Our Director came to ITMA in the 1990s on transition year work experience!! #ArchiveHour

Some of our students have engaged with archival materials with some wonderful results! See Emer Ní Scolaí giving her take on a tune she found in the 19th cent. Grier music ms which ITMA has digitised & made available. #ArchiveHour youtube.com/watch?v=8l2ODB…

Archive Hour Q3: Collecting from the living artist is an urgent responsibility for ITMA to ensure that unique musical knowledge & insight is safeguarded. ITMA captures contemporary material through our recording programmes: Drawing from the Well, Saothar & Saoithe #ArchiveHour

Q4: There are many challenges so I will focus on one! ITMA has over 30yrs of field recordings including oral histories. These are recorded on multiple different formats. One of the major challenges we face is to continue to preserve & make this collection accessible. #ArchiveHour

Q6. Both are as equally important. The archive is a facilitator for both the transmission of knowledge about the tradition as well as the artistic performance itself. Music in ITMA is captured on audio recordings dating back to the 1890s & up to the present day. #ArchiveHour

Q6: Trust of national institutions can be a barrier to accessing some communities. They may have been exploited in the past. But archives can work with underrepresented minority groups to assist them in preserving their own Intangible Cultural Heritage. #ArchiveHour

Through projects like the Thomas McCarthy Collecting Project, ITMA returned archival collections to members of the Traveller community while empowering Thomas in his contemporary collecting of songs & stories from his own community. It’s a perfect partnership! #archivehour
