Religion is fundamentally about keeping a moral code. Christianity is not. Christianity is fundamentally about a gracious God who saves people that fail to keep the moral code.

The church at its best is broken people in need of grace helping and loving other broken people in need of grace.

If you find yourself in a Christian community that talks about grace but chastises you if you give grace to bad and guilty people, it’s time to find a new community.

The challenge for those of us who love the truth of grace is to refrain from arguing for the grace of God in a graceless manner—to be a Pharisee to the Pharisees: “You think you’re good, I know I’m not. That makes me better than you.” See the irony?

I’m not a better person than I was 9 years ago when I bottomed out. But I am more aware of how screwed-up I am and how much grace I need and, I suppose, from a certain point of view, that is better.
