In new work, my colleagues show one-third of Southern Ocean biological activity is supported by dust landing there. Two-thirds at the last glacial maximum when there was more dust landing. Wow. Iron-rich dust feeds phytoplankton. They are a key form of life in the Southern Ocean, which acts as a climate shock absorber, explains experts from University of Tasmania. theconversation.com/floating-robot…

NEW STUDY: w/ ACEAS co-author Zanna Chase shows windblown dust fuels a third of phytoplankton growth in the Southern Ocean. Drier + windier land conditions in future could impact future ocean ecosystems & fisheries. STORY: antarctic.org.au/windblown-dust… PAPER: nature.com/articles/s4158…

Phytoplankton feeds us, but what's feeding the phytoplankton? 🍽️ We were recently part of a team led by University of Tasmania that used robotic floats to discover that windblown dust delivers enough iron to support a third of the Southern Ocean’s phytoplankton growth. csiro.au/en/news/All/Ar…
