As Jennifer McLaren demonstrates in this essay, convict women’s lives at the #ParramattaFemaleFactory changed greatly during the Bells’ reign; solitary confinement cells were built & the women generated revenue with needlework & laundry. Something else was allegedly afoot, too: fraud!
New on the St. John’s Cemetery Project blog! A repost of Jennifer McLaren’s blog about the process of researching & writing her recent #biography on #Parramatta #FemaleFactory matron Sarah Bell. Great tips for smashing through brick walls when researching 19thc women #twitterstorians #OzHist
This will particularly resonate with anyone writing their #familyhistory. Jennifer McLaren mentions her collaboration with #familyhistorians for her St. John’s Cemetery Project essay on Sarah Bell the matron of the Parramatta #femalefactory Female Factory Online
If anyone missed Jennifer McLaren’s essay, do check it out: stjohnscemeteryproject.org/bio/sarah-bell/ It forms part of a wonderful online collection St. John’s Cemetery Project that uses the St John’s Cemetery as a focal point from which to illustrate varied experiences of life in the early colony of NSW #ozhist
Sarah Moses, featured in St. John’s Cemetery Project’s latest offering & buried at St John’s #Parramatta, was originally a convict in Van Diemen’s Land. She served a solitary confinement sentence there, most likely at the Cascades Female Factory...whilst pregnant! 😧

Congratulations to PFFFriends for achieving 10,000 signatures in UnescoWorldHeritage petition for #Parramatta #FemaleFactory! To mark the moment, the Friends have organised this very special event: bit.ly/PFFUNESCO. Donations support CWA of NSW activities in disaster affected NSW!
