On the 8th September 1943, RAF Cottesmore was handed over to the Americans and became AAF Station 489, part of the US IXth Air Force. it became home to the hedquarters of the 52nd Troop Carrier Wing and the 316th Troop Carrier group with the 36th, 37th, 44th & 45th Troop Carrier

Great visit today to the RAF Metheringham on a recce for a new 'battlefield' tour I'm creating looking at the story of the 'Delivery Boys' of the US IX Troop Carrier Command 52nd Troop Carrier Wing. They have a C47 Dakota which is painted on the starboard side to represent RAF
