Somebody asked me after the game what I meant when I said how much fun this team was to watch. So I’ll expand a bit on my statement even though Twitter isn’t ideal for long-form thought development. This team reminded me of the girls soccer season. Success didn’t come easy.

Halfway through the season, this team was not playing their best. They had clear talent but hadn’t jelled as a unit or found their identity. But they kept working, bought into the coaching staff’s philosophy, and things began to click.

They got huge pitching performances from 8 or 9 different guys. They got big hits up and down the lineup. Vlad Johns overcame adversity to throw a perfect game. Freshmen suddenly became great bunters and fielders. They won 13 of their last 15 games. They won a district title.

Just like the girls soccer team, this resilience reflects great leadership from the juniors and seniors, and outstanding coaching from Coach Tissot and his staff. They became a real team, and they did it all with great class.

Educators will tell you that the most enjoyable part of teaching or coaching is witnessing kids’ growth. You fall in love with the process more than the outcome. And while the outcome of the season was great, the process of this team growing was even more rewarding to watch.

Thanks for a wonderful season, boys. You made us proud and reminded me of why I love being in the education business.
