As part of their ongoing series, Next Big Idea Club asked me how I’d summarize “The Return of Great Powers” in five points and here they are:

1- The Ukraine invasion was a 1939 moment.
2- Churchill was right about the crocodile.
3- Their security is our security.
4- Americans…

Biden is simply recommitting the U.S. to its existing treaty commitment to the Philippines but along with his repeated pledge to defend Taiwan, he has now committed the U.S. to military action in two places China is openly threatening.

Regarding OJ, this is the saddest thing I read today:

“For three decades we tirelessly pursued justice for Ron and Nicole, and despite a civil judgement and his confession in If I Did It, the hope for true accountability has ended.”

A sobering report from Ukraine from Alexander S. Vindman ❎ to me just now:

“It’s quite precarious, frankly. I think now it’s increasingly clear that this country is shifting to a defensive footing.
Ideally, that defensive footing lasts through the rest of this year.”

Until recently, U.S. allies expressed their fear of American isolationism under Trump’s influence only privately. Now, those fears are very public, as the Japanese PM made clear before Congress just now:

“I detect undercurrent of self doubt among some Americans about what your…

I’m not sure they’re equivalent. The U.S. maintains its security arrangement with Israel, as it has for decades, with billions a year in support. The debate now is about conditioning some of that aid on humanitarian access to Gaza and greater care for civilian lives. The aid was…

Notable: Biden says he was “blunt and straightforward” with Netanyahu and added “we’ll see what he does in meeting the commitments he made to me.”

“Ukraine today, maybe East Asia tomorrow”, says Japanese PM Kishida - this is exactly the view I heard from leaders from the U.S. to Europe to Asia, drawing a direct line between Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and China’s designs on Taiwan.

As the U.S. and Japan expand their defense partnership, remember this commitment may have no more than a seven-month timeline. Trump’s former advisors told me in “The Return of Great Powers” that Trump sees no value in the U.S.-Japan alliance, as with U.S.-South Korea and NATO…

The months-long delay in U.S. military assistance to Ukraine will become a case study in U.S. strategic self-destruct:

“The commander of US European Command told lawmakers that the Russians are currently firing 5 times as many artillery shells as the Ukrainians, and that number…

This is a shared view across US and its allies:

The commander of US European Command said that Ukraine “will not be able to prevail” in the war against Russia without continued US support this year.

“The severity of this moment cannot be overstated,” Gen. Chris Cavoli told…

Breaking: Arizona Supreme Court rules the state must adhere to a 123-year-old penal code barring all abortions except in cases when “it is necessary to save” a pregnant person’s life.

If there was intellectual consistency to the current GOP’s foreign policy positioning, abandoning Ukraine to Russia would be the equivalent of leaving Afghanistan to the Taliban. But there isn’t. One is a sign of American weakness and the other is not our fight.
