We have managed very well without inpatient rehab wards sin North East London East London NHS Foundation Trust (ELFT) North East London NHS Foundation Trust (NELFT) and find the Rehab and Social Psychiatry Faculty statement misleading, disingenuous and strange.

The work & mental health debate is at risk of being weaponised & it’s playing into the wrong hands. Work in of itself is not ‘treatment’ for any physical or mental health condition, but it is a human right & has well evidenced benefits on our mental health & social stability.

An excellent 🧵 as always from Dr Sarah Hughes on mental health and employment. The Cellar Trust has run these services for many years and I would agree with all of these points wholeheartedly.

It’s great to see that 111 is now England wide, I was fortunate enough to be part of the 2nd ever pilot, first one designed by our friends in Bradford, followed by us in Cambs & Pet. It doesn’t magic new resources, but it does give people access to immediate help.

NHS efficiency & productivity gains come from: - stop warehousing people in hospitals - investing in adult social care - same in public health - & primary & community care - stop ICS obsession with acute budgets & KPIs & invest in prevention - person & not organisation focus 🙏

My colleague consultant psychiatrists who are so keen on inpatient mental health treatment and lengthy admissions to rehab units should maybe try spending a week locked up on one. The system can't even get enough of us to work on them substantively.

A big trend of the last 20 years has been admin headcount reduction, and I am *convinced* it's a big part of our productivity crisis. Instead of one admin on 25k, you make 10 staff on 2-6x the pay do admin they're slow/inefficient at, costing vastly more. True in NHS/gvt/corps.
