amid all the talk about how people support media, a reminder: *small* outlets like Bolts thrive on and need reader support — & I promise you whatever other niche website you love but haven't subscribed to does as well. Consider them! for bolts: boltsmag.org/donate

I cannot emphasize enough how disturbing it is that Fulton and Dekalb county voting precincts were targeted for bomb threats. These are the biggest, Blackest counties in Georgia. A quarter of the state's Black population between them.

Pushed by advocates, a sheriff’s office in Michigan hired a couple of formerly incarcerated people to lead civic engagement, voting, and candidate forum in the local jail: boltsmag.org/flint-michigan…

I am not mad about him pardoning his son, I am mad about him ONLY pardoning his son. Thousands of petitions have been sitting on his desk for his whole term, he promised to end the federal death penalty, + all the crack v. powder folks are still sitting in prison

Hunter Biden pardoned. Okay, President Biden: There are now 40 men on federal death row. You promised to end the death penalty but haven’t even issued a single clemency. 60 members of Congress are calling for it. When are their clemencies coming?

This seems like a good time to emphasize the relationship between the clemency power and Biden's legacy. As Mark Osler and I noted in September in a NY Times op-ed, Biden's pardon/commutation record is grim right now -- a historically low grant rate. /1

Israel's remote-controlled quadcopters have been filmed dropping bombs and firing on Gaza's Palestinians, while doctors say they have treated patients with injuries from the drones. This is what we know about them ⤵️

NYT: "For years, Pharmacy Benefit Managers took payments from opioid manufacturers in return for not restricting the flow of pills. As tens of thousands of Americans overdosed and died from prescription painkillers, the middlemen collected billions of dollars in payments."

In Alabama, the man frying chicken at KFC and the woman making beds at Holiday Inn could be a prisoner. The state earns millions leasing inmates to hundreds of companies, deeming them safe enough to work, but routinely denying them parole. apnews.com/article/prison…

The report states Tulsa police deputized 500 drunk White men and told them they could kill the "first n**ger" that they saw and the law would back them after the fact. Then federal authorities covered this up for 100 years and did nothing to compensate the victims.

Today I was granted access to speak with incarcerated firefighters. They told me: - they hadn’t showered in 5 days - they were not provided regularly meals - they were working 24 hours in a row - they feel under appreciated and underpaid

THREAD. Something must be said about the New York Times. We are in the midst of a full-blown fascist takeover, and the NYT let one of its most dishonest reporters publish an article today full of misinformation arguing for massive new investments in police and surveillance.
