It’s Women History Month and I’m celebrating all the mothers who literally help to write the first chapters of another human’s life, all while working on the pages of their own. I see you mama. And you are amazing.

If your first reaction/thought about #DaunteWright is he “should’ve complied“ — you need to stop and ask yourself WHY you think death is a reasonable answer/consequence. Noncompliance isn’t a reason to take someone’s life. The system has been broken. We HAVE TO build a new one.

“Healing is a decision to do something different — it doesn’t always have to be a response to something severe or crisis-driven.” This message right here was shared during one of Mommy Brain’s facilitated discussions and it’s an entire word. Who else needs to hear this?

Can we please stop telling parents to cherish all of the moments because it goes too fast — we already know this. Hearing it just piles on guilt when we are already struggling.

The US currently has… ✔️NO national paid parental or medical leave YET has… ✔️The highest maternal mortality rate for a developed nation ✔️Massive inequities within every single system from our homes to places of work to hospitals and clinics #PaidLeaveForAll

4 weeks #PaidLeave added back to #BuildBackBetter is not a victory or start. I had an emergency c-section with my first and my son ended up spending 12 days in the NICU. I also bled for 6-8 wks after each birth. We can’t accept the bare minimum, bc too often the bar stays there.

A note for myself and anyone else who needs the gentle reminder to stop “should-ing” yourself. Working on quieting that inner critic that says: I should be doing more. I should be farther along in life and career. I should… Instead embracing more grace, patience, self-love.

One of the more jarring parts of parenthood is the constant noise. The loud toys. The loud voices. The yelling and crying that leave your ears ringing. It’s an assault on your senses that you never quite get used to. Solidarity to all y’all who understand this to your core.

I recently wrote a story that asked our elders to share learnings they picked up along the way…this beautiful reflection from Iquo, 68, a mother + grandmother has stayed with me. Sharing for anyone else needing the reminder: Life doesn’t have to be perfect for it to be good.

In Mommy Brain support groups, we’re talking resentment that comes up in roles/experiences we once dreamed about. Our therapist shared at the center of these feelings is unmet expectations—I’ve been reflecting on this & 🤯 I see how MY or someone else’s expectations are at play

One of the the hardest parts of parenthood is holding space for our children as they learn and figure out who they are, plus the big feelings that come with that — while also trying to give ourselves that same grace.

“While the struggles differ for mothers who work in an office, remotely or in the home, the overall labor that they put in continues to be undervalued.” Read my latest for care.com: All Moms Are Working Moms care.com/c/what-it-mean…
