Interesting case study in the impact of memorials on popular historical perception. The relatively recent memorial marking the Choctaw Famine donation in Midleton has led to the incorrect assumption, widely reported, that the donation was originally sent to Midleton, e.g. here.

Names of a whopping 35% of those enumerated in Clonmany, DonegalArchives , 1821, survive, so we made them available via Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland . C. 2k names, ages, occupations, etc. Amazing resource for Donegal genealogists, local historians. One of the best survival rates in Ireland

Today's arrival, a programme from Celtic Football Club v KPV Kokkola, 1970 European Cup 1st Round. Kokkola is just up the road and I've see KPV a few times. Celtic recorded their record European win in this game 9-0, and won the return 5-0. Changed days for KPV now, in Finland's third tier.

Looking forward to heading Stateside tomorrow. 1st stop is Antietam to begin research work on the Irish experience of the battle. This famous Alexander Gardner image shows the fate of one of them-the lone grave of 50-year-old #Dublin emigrant John Marshall, KIA 17 September 1862.

The view this morning from the Observation Tower at the Sunken Lane, Antietam. The Irish Brigade attacked across this field towards Confederate positions in the Lane on 17th September 1862, taking horrendous casualties in the process. #IrishDiaspora

Another view of the area where the Irish Brigade fought at Antietam in 1862. This is some of the ground they occupied showing the varying terrain which contributed to some unit's casualties. An awful lot of Irish emigrant journeys came to an end on this ground. #IrishDiaspora

I was particularly struck this afternoon at how many instances there are in Antietam National Cemetery of Irish Americans buried side-by-side. Here's one example, Thomas Connors and Patrick Darcey, who both died as a result of the fighting in Antietam's West Woods. #IrishDiaspora
