The harm caused by the UK prison system far outweighs any justice it claims to deliver. Most people leave more broken than when they entered, placing greater strain on vital services and fuelling ongoing cycles of mental illness and crime.

Mental health beds fell from 67,000 in 1987 to 17,000 in 2022, with further cuts since. The failure to provide adequate funding for "care in the community" just led to the mentally ill ending up in prison, & since the mental health beds have been cut there is nowhere else to go.
