Tales tell of fairies marrying mortal men. In one, the object of a fairy’s affection was an old man who had been long baptized, the fairies baked him in an oven to reduce him to ashes before kneading him anew; a ritual that made the new husband young and handsome. #FolkloreSunday

#InternationalFairyDay

For #InternationalFairyDay, did you know fairies are thought to affect writers and artists too? One kind, the Pooka (aka Puca, Phooka) is known for luring folks onto its back and taking them for a wild ride -for an artist it can be fabulous. Or a disaster. medium.com/illumination/w…

The Lüneburg Manuscript (1440-50) references a piper leading 130 children out of Hamelin. The Grimm brothers based their evil magic Rattenfänger tale on an actual event that occurred in 1284. #ofdarkandmacabre #bookchatweekly

'Given folklore's quiet pervasiveness in all our lives, it is unsurprising that it has often been used to think through the big issues faced by a community' - Tatiyana Bastet & I have edited an issue of Peace Review Journal on #folklore. Read the OA intro tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.10…

A really clear review that explains the unique book 'Kin S Fur' by Margaret Yocom. As intriguing an idea/art piece as it seemed, I wasn't sold on it, as a reader, until Lissa's review - but now I am! (If this is your first time hearing about the book - read this review first!)

"Once Upon A Crime" with LRRH as detective? I'm surprised it's taken anyone this long! There was a (mostly) fun anthology with the same title in 1999-a few others since too. Hopefully, this Japanese series will be more fun than not. (Tell Me A Story was interesting but violent.)

Remember when Neil Gaiman asked about folktales dealing with curiosity? Here's a handy list, with some notes on why tales tend to teach #curiosity as a survival skill, and some added tales for 2023. This is a "friend link" so no paywall! :) medium.com/the-wondering/…

There were stories in the middle ages about the Finnish merchants who were selling balls of yarn to the travellers who were travelling along the shore. The travellers were said to get the favorable winds when they opened the knots from the yarn. #WyrdWednesday 1/2
