And once again, the issue isn’t that there shouldn’t be homeless shelters. The issue is whether it’s fair to place the majority of them in Black neighborhoods, most of whom have been waiting for permanent affordable housing and are instead getting shelters.

A little Brooklyn history: a part of Clinton Hill was long referred to as BedStuy (when I was a kid, we used to laugh at other kids insisting their home on Fulton and Clinton Ave wasn’t in BedStuy). Anyway, today it’s very diverse, very large Black middle class population.

So remember when I told y’all about NYC’s history of opening homeless shelters largely in Black neighborhoods and then they protest “no, where is the affordable housing? How come you’re putting them all here + not spreading them out?”
