His words brought a flush to her cheeks, a brief moment of weakness before him. How she’d missed him, missed these peaceful moments. “The King has been anxious of late, I cannot begin to imagine how busy that has made you. But it is wonderful to see you again.”

“War with my brother . . .” Anne mourned having a relationship with him, mourned their youth where they were not divided by politics. She knew this war would take her loyal musketeers away from her and that worried her as well. “I have missed you as well.”

Anne was quiet for the briefest moment, before she spoke, softly. “Yes. I wish it. Speak with Constance. She’ll help us. She hardly leaves my side now.”

For a moment, she simply relished in this, in having his hands holding hers. When she spoke next, she was speaking in Spanish, a language she knew he knew. “Thank you. For all you do for me.”

“You were my first friend here, Aramis. My only friend for some time. You will never know how much that means to me.” To hear him call her Ana, her given name, it sent a flutter through her heart.

“Good.” Her smile was brief, before she fell quiet. When she spoke next, she’d returned to French, rather than Spanish. “Until later, my loyal musketeer.”

To say Ana was worried that evening was an understatement. Even though she trusted Constance, part of her feared someone would learn of this meeting. Would question the Dauphin’s parentage. Still, she came. Waiting until the secret door opened and Aramis entered.

Without hesitating, she crossed the room to stand before him, one hand hesitantly moving towards him before pulling away. Scared to make contact. Scared to cross that boundary. “You . . . You arrived safely? I trust Constance was good help.”
