पूर्वकाल में राजा एक विशिष्ट हाथी को श्रीगज पद पर नियुक्त कर उसका नियमित पूजन करते थे। ऐसी ही प्रथा केरल मन्दिरों में अब भी दिखती है। In past, Kings used to honour a special elephant regularly after appointing him as ŚṛīGaja. Similar practice is seen in Kerala temples even now.

They ARE peacocks. You can even see the "eyes" in the feathers. Peacocks as a symbol of royalty developed in India and was exported to the near east via the Mittani.
