Factors that impact learning - learners’ prior knowledge (including misconceptions), teachers’ ability to present new information keeping this in mind; the opportunities (& types) she provides to practice -rehearse, extrapolate, generalise; & students’ willingness to learn.

Would you sit on an aeroplane that crashes 60-80% of the time? Probably not, yet we send our kids to schools that can teach 60-80% (if we’re lucky) to read

Aquinas views intellect and will as spiritual faculties unique to humans, rooted in the soul. These powers enable abstract thought and free choice, transcending material processes. He'd likely see them as fundamentally distinct from AI algorithms. ncronline.org/opinion/guest-…

I'm a big fan of sentence combining and imitation. My 5th graders are learning about prepositional phrases. Embed vocabulary if you can & encourage Ss to use vocabulary that was previously learned like the word emphatic.

An outstanding report on how reading is taught in wales. In Scotland, we have EXACTLY the same issues We have a reading crisis. It is no fault of the teachers but the decision makers and programmes the teachers are given to teach. They are fundamentally flawed

What an amazing thread from Rhys. Outstanding journalism and getting to the root of the problem. The exact same issues are occurring in Scotland right now. Yet, we know how to teach reading so that all children can succeed
