“Dong Xi yang kao” is often cited in studies on the Basay peoples in 17th-century northern Taiwan. However, Dr. Yu-mei Chen notes inconsistencies with Basay customs and that many contents were copied from “Dongfan ji,” which describes southwestern Taiwan.

In 1942, Chang-ju Shih joined the Northwest Historical and Geographical Expedition Team to measure over 300 grottoes in Dunhuang, providing early data that remains crucial for reconstructing damaged sites. His manuscripts are available online. For more: reurl.cc/j9XQO2

When conducting dialect surveys in the 1930s, IHP researchers also collected local folk stories. One from She County, Anhui, described in both gazetteers and a stele inscription by local officials, depicts the unjust execution of Madame Huang due to miscommunication.

“Medical Recipe Cave” at Longmen contains 140–155 medical recipes (“fang”) engraved from 650–653, a Buddhist practice to benefit society. Dr. Liu Shu-fen suggests these recipes circulated among monks and were introduced to Japan through Buddhist exchanges.

Dr. Cheng-yun Liu has analyzed documents from the Grand Secretariat Archives (IHP), indicating that the Qing “lijia” and “baojia” systems were often used to meet the demands of local governments, extending beyond their original functions of taxation and maintaining order.
