A very interesting methods paper reviewing the practical challenges associated with making the recovery of DNA sequence data from museum collections more routine ➡ doi.org/10.3897/BDJ.11… #museomics #biodiversity #naturalhistory

Dr Beery gives examples of the practical use of AI. She and I particularly like the #iNaturalist example where the researcher used iNat images of fish to discover observations of kelp in the back of those images. #tdwg2024

So I’ve attended several #SPNHC and #TDWG conferences and the continuing theme for me is how invested & hard working ALL the attendees are in preserving, creating, curating & enriching biodiversity specimens & data for the benefit of EVERYONE. #tdwg2024

So inspiring to hear about the Rutgers University “Herbarium Army”. Env & Biol Science students must complete 126 hours of experience-based learning and boy do they get that with Megan King, coming away with so many work & life skills (and their collection is now 98% digitised!) #TDWG2024

A bulk attribution feature under development that has until now been used exclusively by the Bionomia bot. It requires care, precision, and good user documentation. Coming soon!

A little bit of info about GBIF @ecoevo.social/@gbif There’s no such thing as ‘@gbif data’—each dataset is unique! 🌿 @gbif & Darwin Core have been fully updated to align with invasive alien species standards, and all of GRIIS is already integrated into @gbif. #InvasiveSpecies Neobiota 2024

I'm teaching an ecological data science course for undergrads, and I'm looking for good, publicly available datasets to use for class projects, like FishBase, NEON, or published datasets associated with papers. What are some good ones? Looking for inspiration! 🐟🍃

Hi, ER Doc here. Just a friendly reminder if your nose is bleeding, DO NOT TILT YOUR HEAD BACK. This just makes the blood drip down the back of your throat and you will then swallow and/or choke on it. Pinch the soft part of your nose and TILT YOUR HEAD FORWARD. Please tell all

This week I’ve updated links between taxonomic names and publication identifiers (DOIs and Wikidata QIDs) for datasets from IndexFungorum Kew Mycology , IPNI UK and BioNames. The links have been uploaded to CheckListBank and Zenodo

Dr. Elizabeth Sawin These are similar to questions I ask about ransomware taking down everything. I asked about how the network switches would be restored from their configuration files. I was told those are stored on a server. That server is down. What do you do? Yes, you’d be in a bad way.

Dr. Elizabeth Sawin I did NERT in San Francisco ( a beefed up CERT Community Emergency Response Team ) and the plan includes physical runners to bring pieces of paper to physical locations and there is also a HAM radio team to comm btwn stations. Every place needs this, but harder to do in sprawl
