Icelandic Civil Protection authorities have declared a state of emergency following increased seismic activity in Reykjanes Peninsula. As a precautionary measure the town of Grindavík (population 3669) was successfully evacuated last night and thankfully everyone is safe.

Secretary General Jacqui Mccrum was delighted to meet earlier today with Iceland’s Ambassador to Ireland, Sturla Sigurjónsson. They had productive discussions on common areas of interest and priorities, including shared critical undersea infrastructure.

Today´s theme is “learning for lasting peace”. The world is seeing a surge of violent conflicts paralleled by an alarming rise of discrimination, racism, xenophobia, and hate speech. Education helps us remember, to progress and avoid repeating the mistakes of the past.

Iceland has, together with PACE, issued a call for nominations for the Vigdís Prize for Women's Empowerment. The annual prize of 60,000 Euros will reward outstanding initiatives that promote the empowerment of women. 👉Deadline for submitting nominations is 15 February.
