The Environment Agency Midlands field team are adding slats to raise the levels of #Severnside demountable barrier in #Bewwdley today Worcs County Council Highways & Travel Wyre Forest DC

Our officers have been out today monitoring the situation at Northwich. Phase 1 and 2 of the flood defences will remain operational tonight as a precautionary measure with Dane St and London Road Bridge expected to stay closed until tomorrow morning.

If you want an example of the value of hard flood defences, look no further than Upton. Built in 2011 at a cost of £4.5m it’s protected homes and businesses from flooding over 50 times now. Today some places would be under 5ft of water.

It’s an awesome sight. And illustration of the value of flood defences. Ian would probably be up to his chest in water. Actually he’d probably be in the Severn Estuary!

To give an idea of how far we're already going with flood defences, these are the barriers when at full height at Bewdley. Water got a long way up these in 2020. I don't know what pressure would behind it but it's scary. You can't just keep going higher!

To be clear I’m a huge fan of flood defences, having seen the incredible difference they’ve made on the Severn & Wye. On this chart Upton would have flooded each time a bar goes over the red line. Hard to see how it could remain viable. But defences have limits.
