@_casuali From our reanalyses, the 2D trees in which Eukarya emerge from asgards are biased by several pitfalls and by the existence of lateral gene transfer from proto-eukarya to asgards. See our review in Da Cunha et al., 2022 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/ml…

Nitric oxide donor sodium nitroprusside serves as a source of iron supporting Pseudomonas aeruginosa growth and biofilm formation biorxiv.org/content/10.110… #biorxiv_micrbio

Our student Xavier Bertran (who is not on X) worked out that in a closed culture system, the nitro oxide donor SNP, in addition to its role in dispersing PAO1 biofilms, promotes PAO1 biofilm and planktonic cell growth, potentially through donating its iron centre.

Microbiology Monday: To swim or to swarm? 🦠While c-di-GMP inhibits swimming to promote biofilm formation in E. coli, elevated levels of the secondary message molecule trigger production of a surfactant (colanic acid) that aids swarming. #mBio: asm.social/2pm

Out today in Biology Letters - mate copying is not limited to Drosophila melanogaster. It´s sister species D. simulans does it too! We tested females from 3 populations and they all copied. This suggests that this strategy may be more widespread🪰royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rs…

Today I watched a movie titled 南京照相馆which depicted how a group of civilians used photographs to document the atrocities of the Nanking Massacre. It reminded me of my last visit to Nanking, where I paid my respects to John Rabe who protected Nanking civilians during that time

Our following up work on O-antigen sensitising E. coli to bile salt found home at mBio and now online! We showed that disruptions in OM-peptidoglycan linkages confer bile salt resistance in OAg-producing bacteria journals.asm.org/doi/10.1128/mb…

Here is the press release on our recent article describing a novel superfamily of protein domains operating on lipids. Among other things, it unveils the origin of Wnt emerged in animals and numerous other metabolic and biological conflict networks that remain unstudied:

New in #mLife: Yaoqin Hong, Jilong Qin & Makrina Totsika explore how both overly stiff and overly fluid membranes impair biofilm growth in E. coli—revealing a “Goldilocks” fluidity zone. @wileymicrobio 👉doi.org/10.1002/mlf2.7…

Thanks for providing the avenue to this timely work. Additional work revealing a novel strategy by which Gram-negative bacteria maintains fluidity will soon follow.
