A big week for Plasma Donation with the opening of new centres in Croydon and Bolton yesterday! More sites coming this week. A huge "thank you" to everyone involved in achieving these very important milestones for the NHS and NHS Blood+Transplant.

I am delighted to be part of the HSJ Awards 2021 judging panel. The #HSJawards aims to reward & recognise those driving healthcare excellence in the health & social care sector.

The Organ Donation and Transplantation 2030: Meeting the Need strategy launched this week: odt.nhs.uk/odt-structures… (1/10)

It sets out two key aims: to increase further the number of organ donors and to make the most of donated organs for transplant (2/10)

The Strategy sets the NHS’ vision and focus for the next 10 years: to build on the successes of the past and deliver further improvements in the future. (3/10)

It describes how the UK will become a world-leading organ donation and transplantation system and is backed by all four UK health ministers. (4/10)

It's the first time that deceased & living donation and organ utilisation have been brought together into one strategy. It follows the Taking Organ Transplantation to 2020, the Living Donor Kidney Transplantation 2020, and the Taking Organ Utilisation to 2020 strategies. (5/10)

By working together, the NHS and its partners now have an opportunity to build on our tremendous success – and to save or improve the lives of many more patients. (6/10)

There remain disparities in the UK community, e.g. people from ethnic minority backgrounds waiting longer for a transplant. In addition, the number of organs transplanted has not increased at the same rate as the number of donors in recent years. CoVID has also impacted. (7/10)

It therefore sets out a vision for how the NHS will work together to raise donation rates, tackle inequality and increase organ utilisation across all organ groups. Building on previous strategies, it contains elements of evolution and revolution for the UK system. (8/10)

The donation and transplantation community across the UK is focused on responding to these challenges and opportunities. New technologies designed to boost and maintain organ quality during the retrieval process, are playing an increasingly crucial role. (9/10)

It's an ambitious strategy, but one that needs to be for the benefit of all people who need a transplant. Now to deliver it. (10/10)
