Hong Kong kids are depressed for many legitimate reasons, including academic pressure and - in just the last four years - living through massive protests and Covid. Authorities should stop saying they need to build mental resilience. They have already shown a remarkable amount

Great post by Jason Li on why people in Hong Kong “cannot bear to watch #expats”. Decolonial representation or identity politics that marginalises the Sinophone peripheries remains partial & Western/white centric, as Shih Shu-mei's #sinophonestudies critique has long pointed out

We *definitely did not* spend 20 minutes of precious office time working on a photoshoot with the stylish proof copy of TONGUELESS by Lau Yee-Wa that Serpent's Tail sent through. Provocative contemporary Hong Kong noir, publishing 6th June with Jennifer Feeley @jenniferfeeley.bsky.social's translation!

Among the poets featured in "Elegies" is Liu Wai-tong, whose "Two Million And One" begins thus: "After white snow is black snow after two million is two million and one. The numbers that come after will always add onto him.." hkprotesting.com/2020/07/22/poe…

1/ I learnt this morning that a good friend passed away. In addition to being an eminent film scholar, David Bordwell was a passionate film fan -- and we got to know each other through our mutual love of Hong Kong cinema. (He also loved, and cared for, Hong Kong itself too.)

After a London-based friend posted about going and viewing "The Lyricist Wannabe", I got to realising that it is screening (in a good number of cities) in the UK! What's even more impressive is that its British theatrical run began just weeks after it opened in Hong cinemas!

Sending good wishes to friends in Taiwan. Hope you are all safe. A measure of the strength of the earthquake: believe it or not, I felt my bed vibrate this morning... IN HONG KONG, whose Observatory said there were over a hundred locally felt reports of this "earth tremor".

Subtweet: Look at this image for the Hong Kong Film Archive's current martial arts film programme. Check out its film selection and take note of who are missing from the programme poster. (It says a lot about which stars are far more popular outside of Hong Kong than within it.)

This essay by Martin Ho Wan LAW is a must-read for me as a (self-proclaimed) CAllFan, a Cantopop lover (well I think I was more passionate about it 20 yrs ago...), and someone interested in Hong Kong diaspora. journals.openedition.org/transtexts/2530 (1/4)
