It is quite wild to imagine that this “response” to student protest is in any sense a defense of an institution of higher learning. Depending on your perspective, it is either the destruction of a community or the exposure of a lie.

Today in The Nation we have a piece by Lujayn, a 14-year-old girl in Gaza, that has floored me every time I've read it. It's about what happened when an Israeli bulldozer came to destroy the house she was staying in, and you must, must, must read it. thenation.com/article/world/…

I am now in competition with friends and colleagues to keep my job. The university is going to lose some of the brightest, hard-working and generous people I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. How can a university care so little for teaching excellence and research?

50 years ago (1974) there wasn't even a sex discrimination act. It was legal to pay women less, refuse them mortgages and require them to leave work on marriage So this is clearly a bit daft.

The truly tortured poets, the real sickos, don't think stuff like 'my bf reminds me of a tattooed golden retriever.' They think stuff like 'what if you were grieving and then there was a weird bird'

Advice for scholars: next time you lecture on Kant and revolutions at “Downing” (Darwin College) Cambridge, make sure your hair is neatly tied and that you’re not blonde. Or else your research impact will be on the The Spectator libido section.

Looking forward to presenting at AHA (Australia) in July and catching up with people! I'll be speaking about racial transformation in the Sydney Gazette before 1820.
