I hope that today’s Security Council resolution may help improve the delivery of much-needed aid but a humanitarian ceasefire is the only way to begin to meet the desperate needs of people in Gaza and end their ongoing nightmare.

I've just invoked Art.99 of the UN Charter - for the 1st time in my tenure as Secretary-General.

Facing a severe risk of collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza, I urge the Council to help avert a humanitarian catastrophe & appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire to be declared.

1/2 I welcome the opening of Rafah crossing today for some 80 sick & wounded Palestinians in #Gaza to get treatment in #Egypt , as well as, for some 500 foreign passport holders & rotation of #UN staff. An Important step in the right direction, which we need to build on.

I reiterate my appeal for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire, together with the unconditional release of hostages & the delivery of relief at a level corresponding to the dramatic needs of the people in Gaza, where a humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in front of our eyes.

Matiullah Wesa is finally free.

But 200 days in jail for what? For asking Afghan girls to be allowed to go back to school — the most basic human right and dignity.

Two hundred days in Taliban jail for that.

The situation in the Middle East is growing more dire by the hour.

At a crucial moment like this, it is vital to be clear on the fundamental principle of respecting & protecting civilians.

I call for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in the Middle East to ease the epic human suffering.

Too many lives - and the fate of the entire region - hang in the balance.

“…the horrific acts by Hamas do not justify responding with collective punishment of the Palestinian people…any solution to this tragic, decades-long ordeal of death and destruction requires full recognition of the circumstances of both Israelis and Palestinians…”

The noose around the civilian population in Gaza is tightening.

How are 1.1 million people supposed to move across a densely populated warzone in less than 24 hours?

I shudder to think what the humanitarian consequences of the evacuation order would be.

Crucial life-saving supplies – including fuel, food and water -- must be allowed into Gaza.

We need rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access now.

I appeal to all parties – and those who have an influence over those parties -- to avoid any further escalation and spillover - António Guterres.
