White Ridge-named for the color of the gypsum that forms much of the mesa. Gypsum is a mineral consisting of hydrated calcium sulfate & is commonly used in cement. It formed as a chemical reaction frm evaporation of an ancient water body…this Ojito area was once covered with/🌊!

White Sands National Park! It might be my favorite one so far! From the Tularosa Basin is one of the world's great natural wonders - the glistening white sands of NM. Great wave-like dunes of gypsum sand have engulfed miles of desert, creating the world's largest gypsum dunefield

Deep rocky canyons, flowering cactus, and desert wildlife—treasures above the ground in the Chihuahuan Desert. Hidden beneath the surface are more than 119 caves—formed when sulfuric acid dissolved limestone leaving behind caverns of all sizes. Loved exploring Carlsbad Caverns!

Dinosaur footprints & other fossils- millions of years old found here in Canyon Lake Gorge. We are in Hill Country of Texas and there is MUCH Geology to be discovered! We walked on ancient fossilized ripples that once lay under Ocean. More proof to Pangaea and Continental Drift!

Thank you Texas A&M for the great learning experience! This is just another reminder of the importance of hands-on learning! I have learned SO much not only about rocks & Geology, but about history and even cultures of our Mid-Western states. Now at the Alamo & back to Houston.

Rising Buffalo spoke to us about his Native American culture & its connection to the Park. We sat among the trees w/hummingbirds listening to his heartfelt story of courage & determination.Later we drove through the park to the West side & stood at the start of the Colorado River

WILDFLOWER WEDNESDAY Alpine Avens are currently blooming in #RMNP. These bright yellow flowers bloom in alpine areas from Alaska to New Mexico. In summer, American pika collect Alpine Avens to store in haypiles to supplement their diet during the long winter season.
