A hideous scene from UCU Congress earlier today. A Ukrainian victory would mean "subjugation and oppression" by "American imperialism". "The main enemy is at home!" The UCU backs the "Stop the War Coalition". It wants Ukraine to be left defenceless. Foul.

There's a vicious cycle where cranks at meetings of unions, local government, etc to rant inanely about foreign policy issues unrelated to the practical considerations of normal members. This turns normal members off and they stop attending, which only empowers the cranks.

Numerous tweets from UCU members saying they'll quit the union on account of this horrible motion. But this is one reason why Socialist Appeal & SWP push such motions: to alienate non-fanatics & drive them out of the union, making it easier for them to win votes & elections. 1/2

I am a UCU member — but today, not a proud one. The membership has been blindsided by this unconscionable motion, which stands at odds with the values of solidarity, freedom and human dignity supposedly espoused by our union and the union movement more broadly. I stand with 🇺🇦

Is this the first post-motion response from the UCU President ? Because if so it’s small-minded stuff, given the seriousness of the matter at hand.. those dissenting members she speaks of surely want more from her by way of comment/explanation than a petulant dig at Paul Mason?
