"When I wrote my book in 2017, most publishers turned it down because they didn’t think domestic abuse was a palatable subject. Talking about being a mother, self-medicating, the bleak reality of daily life – it was all too much." Melanie Janine Brown MBE is a hero independent.co.uk/arts-entertain

This is something I was told. And it made me shut myself off, scared of seeing friends. I’d even get annoyed at them for behaving in ways I thought he wouldn’t like. If this is you, just know – people who love you don't want to remove other people from your life. #controlnotlove

Here’s your Sunday reminder that no one should make you feel guilty or frightened for simply doing the things you love, or being who you are. ❀

Coercive control isn’t spoken about enough. And the upshot is, when young people experience it, they aren’t able to recognise or describe what’s happening to them. Lots of education work to do! bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northe

Exactly as many feared, police believe that Emma and Lettie were shot by her husband, George, before he committed suicide. Another remarkable woman and her daughter lost to male violence. RIP. theguardian.com/uk-news/2023/f

Home Office ministers & secretary of state have nothing to offer today in all the news about murdered and raped women than platitudes about victim bravery and leaving no stone unturned. My gosh we needed a better reshuffle. DO SOMETHING! Save your sorrow and roll up your sleeves

Abusers get satisfaction from sucking the life out of vibrant, assertive women. Whatever you achieve in life, your partner should celebrate you – they don’t ‘live in your shadow’. This headline is a continuation and validation of his abuse. Mail Online

New controls for domestic abuse perpetrators, like tags and stronger sentences, are much-needed. But they don't tackle the root cause – we need more funding and focus on preventing abuse and intervening earlier. Domestic abuse kills 3 women a week. It can be eradicated.

This is utterly horrific. The judge clearly has no understanding of coercive control; how so much of the toxic work of the domestic abuser is done before the physical violence begins. Shameful. change.org/p/cpsuk-take-d

The hidden death toll of domestic abuse – those who die by suicide, because they’ve given up hope of finding a way out from an abuser. We have to get better at giving victim-survivors their way out. theguardian.com/society/2023/f
