There's a pervasive myth that we American car owners cover the costs of the public roads we use (planning, design, construction, maintenance). It's so far from the truth. We're constantly the recipients of massive infrastructure bailouts.

This is a big deal! AFAIK it's the closest any state has come to requiring speed-limiting tech on new cars. SB 961 would require all cars sold in California to have Intelligent Speed Assistance tech that warns drivers if they go 10 mph+ over the posted speed limit.

My mom turned 80 a few months after Henry was killed in traffic. Drunk on martinis (rare for her) she sobbed, I got 80 years and Henry only got 18. One road fatality inflicts devestating sentences of grief on many.

Eventually you just have to find a way to get back to normal...right? (spoiler: nope) What does "normal" actually mean inside #grief? Find out in my new video on YouTube, Here's what we get wrong about the 5 #StagesOfGrief. Watch the entire video at youtu.be/4XjKAeBfgHc

The Economist just published this incredible and tragic chart. Given how many people are killed each year by big cars, it's worth understanding how we got here. Story time 🧵

Last year, I wrote a much longer history of the SUV loophole for my newsletter. You can check out the full story here. distilled.earth/p/the-loophole…

This happens so often: I'm the first to arrive at an intersection and while I am coming to a complete stop a driver to my right or left approaches the intersection, very briefly slows down, and then drives straight through.

Next Wednesday I get to co-lead a workshop, Engaging and Protecting Young Walkers and Rollers at the GHSA meeting in Indianapolis. I am excited to share how youth-lead demonstrations, biking field trips, walking buses, have empowered the students of Hood River County.

i remain convinced that given the relative cheapness to the enormous climate/quality-of-life impact, e-bike subsidies are the most cost-effective, fast, and politically popular climate investment policy that exists at the moment. denverite.com/2024/08/28/den…

I’m glad this info is finally finding light of day, too many SUV apologists, but anyone who’s worked in transportation policy in the U.S. knows the car industry is the most unethical, dishonest, and frankly murderous industry in world history. So many receipts. Good thread 👇🏼

Today's must read Willamette Week cover story is a deep dive into @oregondot's cynical attempts to manufacture community consent for the $1.9 BILLION RQ Freeway Expansion Shout out to Nkenge for speaking truth to power; great Joe Cortright + Khanh Pham for Oregon quotes too #orleg #orpol

i'll just offer that $130m, the amount of money that ODOT has spent so far just on consultants and planners for the $1.9 BILLION RQ Freeway Expansion, is almost 10 times what the state spends annually building safe routes to schools wweek.com/news/2024/09/0…
