January 6, 2021 was one of the very worst days of my life. Today and always, I'm grateful for the men and women who protected the Capitol that day, and honor the five Virginians who tragically lost their lives defending our democracy.

In the midst of the violent attack to overturn a free and fair election, there was one glimmer of hope—the television broadcasting pictures of Virginia State Police cruisers arriving to help the Capitol Police save the country.

Virginia had led an insurrection against the nation 160 years earlier. But today, this generation of Virginians has created a democracy-loving counterpoint to a nation that seems to be sliding toward tyranny.

We’ll celebrate that progress at Governor Spanberger’s inauguration on January 17. We’re keeping the flame of democracy alive and well and America needs our example at a tough time.
