Today I learned that the number 1 was discovered not by Boltzmann, but Planck, in the same lecture where he announced the discovery of 2π! This was 5 years before Einstein independently explained the fundamental role that the number 1 holds for the structure of spacetime.

A wonderful tour through quantum fields, guided by David Tong and Steven Strogatz! David’s one of the great communicators in theoretical physics: clarity of thought and expression while being totally true to the underlying science, and capturing the excitement around the ideas.

Yes it is. (Am I doing this right?) Evidence is information that can change your degree of belief in something. Learning that a theory is inconsistent or disagrees with previously known info, or that a suspected inconsistency can be overcome, qualify just as much as new data.

I’ve been enjoying this account mostly for cursed maths facts. But today, something beautiful that’s also related to my current work! Coming soon: a thread explaining how this is related to counting the possible quantum states of a black hole 🕳

No, not 💯 Elon. In the U.K. they’re not going round ‘finding people who’ve said something they disagree with and putting them in a f—king cage.’ Some people are being charged for inciting racial hatred and for organising acts of violence. It’s very specific, and it’s the law in
