The timing & sense regarding this is beyond belief following the interest rate rise..The new alcohol duty arrives in August & willl add further pressure to a weakened hospitality sector & ramp up inflation.Have the sense to stop this! Rishi Sunak Sir Jeremy Hunt MP Andrew Griffith MP 👇👇👇👇

Totally agree to scrap this but the other major issue being that the timing of this couldn’t be worse. For a lot of the hospitality sector, summer is their busiest season! They are already short of staff and now need to use precious time updating prices & wine lists! 🤦🏻‍♂️

The Govt were right to alert us at the start of July. ‘On 1 August 2023, the Alcohol Duty system will become much simpler, taxing all alcoholic drinks based on their alcohol by volume (ABV)’ It’s not ‘much simpler’ so here’s A guide to the UK duty hikes on wine A very long🧵

Copy of a letter emailed to Andrew Griffith MP - very disappointed not to get a response as this affects so many businesses in the #southdowns constituency. So much for lowering inflation.. Rishi Sunak Sir Jeremy Hunt MP The_Buyer #alcoholdutyreveiw WSTA Harpers Wine #gallofduty

The government keep quoting that they have been “advised by” and “consulted with businesses in our sector” regarding this duty review and implementation. Does anyone actually know anyone who has been consulted re this in the wine industry in the UK? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Hennings Wine (@henningswine) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Totally untrue-you have put further pressure on Hospitality&Wine businesses in the uk.Whatever beer reduction you think there will be for consumers,it’s dwarfed by a massive 20% increase in duty on most wine. Further fueling inflation whilst consulting no one in the industry 🤦🏻‍♂️

UK inflation rate stays at 6.7% & alcohol prices⬆️10.6% in 12 months – over twice GOV.UK’s 5% target - this is further proof that duty rises fuel inflation. We're calling on @jeremy_hunt to #FreezeDuty at the Autumn Budget & help consumers/businesses in a #CostOfLivingCrisis.

What is going on in Pulborough with the A29 being closed again last week! We are closing in on a year of apathy from those who can sort this. Publish a solution timeframe & stick to it. Local business livelihoods are at stake & many other safety concerns Andrew Griffith MP West Sussex Highways

Incredulous to think that they are even considering a further increase in duty on top of the largest increase in 50 years only 3 months ago! Further fuelling inflation & making it less affordable to go out & spend in hospitality businesses when they really need our support..🤦🏻‍♂️

Hennings Wine (@henningswine) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Sadly, has to be read to be believed.. A simply ridiculous idea that will add more time and cost to every bottle of wine in the uk next year.. again.🤦🏻‍♂️ Britain’s Brexit wine duty regime is ‘unworkable’, industry warns ft.com/content/92fb86… via @ft #wine Andrew Griffith MP

Hennings Wine (@henningswine) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Unbelievable, and yes the soundbite “penny off a pint” is totally derisory, with both wine and spirit duty rising (and changing) next year. Increasing Tax never stimulates growth which is what the hospitality sector perhaps had a chance with before this.. 🤦🏻‍♂️👇👇👇
