The most effective networking strategy I’ve found has nothing to do with conferences, cocktail hours, cold emails, or any of the common ideas you hear. 1) Do interesting things. 2) Share them publicly. Like-minded people will come to you.

If your design process is: -the PM sends requirements -you draw lo-fi designs to fit them -you draw hi-fi designs for the Jira ticket -the PM sends you updates requirements for the next iteration then you are not a UX designer, you are a feature designer.

Prototype the absolute simplest version of your dream product. Use it yourself first. Also include teammates, friends & fools. Then pause for a week. Do you miss your product? If the answer is “yes”, you are onto something. A practical heuristic for future value.

Ways to get creatively unstuck: -start over from scratch (obliterate all sunk costs) -walk away for a day -sketch or write through the snag -chunk it into consumable bits -solve another unrelated problem -listen to Bob Marley -re-establish a new set of guiding constraints

Every PM & designer should spend time sitting with the customer support team. It will remind you that one of your goals should be to limit the number of things they have to apologize for.

Trying to learn about user needs by only observing what they do in your product is about as useful as trying to learn about polar bears by only hanging out in zoos. Ooh, do they like the beach ball better than the soccer ball? Well, that’s all you gave them in captivity.

You don't create "a software product"; you create a "make people successful machine". Once you start seeing things that way, it's amazing how different your approach becomes.

It is weird that tooltip tours even became a thing for user onboarding at all. If you go to the Post Office for the first time and say "hey, I'd like to mail a letter" they won't be like "great let's start with giving you a full tour of our facilities"

I feel like you can gauge the culture and camaraderie of your team by imagining you have a sudden death, and guessing just how long it would take for Monday’s morning meeting to move right along.

When people say public speaking is hard often the real mistake is seeing it as one thing. It's at least 3: 1) writing 2) practice 3) performance. Good speakers are good at all three. Good writing only becomes good performing through practice. Novices think there is only #3.

Really enjoying this Bob Iger book. He frequently says things along the lines of "I was only 44 years old at the time, so I still had a lot to learn." What a great attitude. Hard to imagine someone in silicon valley saying that.
