I’ll be in court today as a woman is sentenced for ending her pregnancy beyond the time limit during lockdown. It is understood that she was not able to attend a scan, and did not know how advanced it was. She pleaded guilty to the offence, which carries a max. life sentence.

Whose interests does it serve to imprison a desperate woman who ended a pregnancy during a pandemic when regular healthcare and support wasn’t available? Does it help society? Does it help other women? Medical professionals? Children? How is this a just outcome?

No woman should be in prison for making decisions about her own body. This shocking case highlights the urgent need to change the law. Abortion is healthcare. It must be decriminalised, now.

MPs are currently debating proposed changes to the #EqualityAct, which threaten to roll back hard-won rights. They would exclude trans people from public spaces and allow discrimination to go unchallenged. We must resist this dangerous ideological attack on the trans community.
